The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), whose mission is to work in
partnership with indigenous people to protect the South American rainforest,
announces that President Mark Plotkin, Ph.D. will be keynoting the event,
“Amazonian Shamans, Healthcare, and Google Earth: Saving the Rainforest in
Six Dimensions.” The event is being hosted by fellow ethnobotanist Phyllis
Hogan of Winter Sun in Flagstaff, who has been studying the plants and
peoples of the Southwest for over three decades. The event will be held in
Flagstaff, Arizona on November 7th, 2009.
Phyllis Hogan on Plotkin’s visit: “Mark and I have been colleagues for many
years, and I consider his insight and analysis to be the pioneering word in the
world of the Amazon. His insights into Native American culture, spirituality and
healing are both fascinating and relevant to all of us here in Arizona.”
Incorporated into Dr. Plotkin’s speech will be elements of conservation,
preservation and a deeper understanding of what role the Amazon plays in
today’s global economy, the worldwide health debate, and the future of
medicine. Also discussed, will be The Amazon Conservation Team’s efforts
with Google Earth to map and safeguard land in the Amazon, along with the
indigenous people of Brazil, Colombia and Suriname.
Dr. Plotkin completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University,
received his Masters in Forestry at Yale and earned his Ph.D. at Tufts
University. The author of numerous papers and books, he played a starring
role in the Academy Award-nominated IMAX film “Amazon.” Time magazine
hailed him as an environmental Hero for the Planet,” and the Skoll Foundation
chose him as a “Social Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2008.
